Live With a Guatemalan Family!

Homestays can be arranged with local families, both indigenous and ladino. If you are studying Spanish or Ixil, a homestay is an excellent way to practice what you have learned in class and put it to practical use. Immersion in a Spanish or Ixil speaking environment forces you to practice you language skills on a more rigorous level. A homestay will also give you a chance to interact with the local culture on a level unavailable to those who stay on a hostel or hotel. If you choose a homestay you will be a member of the Nebaj community rather than just another tourist. In addition, a homestay offers the student-traveler a happy medium between comfort and affordability. A week long homestay costs only Q500 ($66 US) and includes 2 daily meals. Compare that to Q900 ($120 US) of staying 7 nights in a hotel and eating 2 daily meals in a local restaurant. Homestays are also offered at a daily rate of Q125 ($16).

All homestay families are dedicated to the following service goals:

-Providing a safe, comfortable, and clean environment.

-Providing a friendly social environment that encourages cultural exchange.

-Providing healthy and tasty Guatemalan meals which meet the needs and preferences of all their guests.

Please be aware, however, that Nebaj is a poor rural town. Homestayers should not expect a great deal of luxury and must be willing to tolerate different cultural norms of comfort. Also please let us know ahead of time if you have any special needs that you family should be aware of, such as vegetarian meals, so that we can plan accordingly.
